A family restaurant for around 100 years, Altanella is best visited when you can eat on the tiny terrace over the canal, with a view across the Bacino di San Marco.

Not surprisingly for a place that began by feeding the local fishermen, the menu is almost exclusively fishy (superb fegato alla Veneziana – calves liver with onions and polenta – is the exception) with a wider choice on weekdays.

Service is friendly. Booking essential, especially for tables outside. No credit cards accepted. Fairly expensive by Venetian standards.

We have recently received a report that the quality of the food in this restaurant has deteriorated. Other reports are welcome and we will revisit as soon as possible. – Helen Wright, 3/2009
