Booking is essential at this trattoria / ristorante just north of Campo de’ Fiori. It’s small – just two rooms, and a few small tables outside in the summer – and gets packed out with Romans who appreciate the creative modern Italian cooking. The atmosphere is busy, noisy and slightly chaotic (especially if there has been an argument in the kitchen) but always fun.
The menu is consistently interesting and usually includes some regional specialities, researched and updated. Pasta is always home-made and reflects seasonal ingredients, and there are good and interesting vegetarian options such as stuffed cabbage leaves. Fish can be out of this world: I will always remember the carpaccio of sea bass marinated in citrus juices. Traditional roast lamb is also excellent among the meat dishes.
Puddings, too, offer something beyond the usual Tiramisu and there is a superb selection of wines. If pudding wines take your fancy ask for a recommendation to go with your choice of dish – they have possibly the best selection in Rome. Mid price.
