Hammersmith (HAMMERSMITH & CITY, DISTRICT, PICCADILLY)
Popular with workers in the vast office block that is Hammersmith, this place is a Fullers pub that happens to have a kitchen serving excellent and authentic Thai food and an assortment of more standard pub lunches, from chicken kiev to fish and chips. The lunch menu is replaced in the evenings by a similarly priced dinner selection, but prices remain good for the portions and quality offered.
Vegetarian options are available for most things, be it phad thai (usual Thai high street fare) or sweet and sour dishes featuring almost any meat desired. The mix-and-match attitude to the menu is flexible and welcome, for most Thai dishes on offer can be had with either chicken, beef or prawns, with lamb and pork occasional options in addition.
The service, however, borders on insulting, especially on Friday lunchtimes when seemingly half of West London descends on the place. And there is one small (in every way) chap working there who refuses to let people sit down unless they’ve ordered food. Apparently a bowl of chips is not food – so be warned. Several fights have narrowly been averted when otherwise sane, rational beings have encountered this chap and *just* stopped themselves from swinging at him.
A real problem is lack of space – tube stations at rush hour are more relaxing environments. Not for the faint-hearted; but if you like Fawlty Towers-type service sans the laughs, this is the place for you.
