Good Italian restaurants in London, it seems, are exactly like buses. You wait ages for just one and then they all turn up at once. In the culinary wasteland that is Shepherd’s Bush Road (local competition: Tesco, two greasy spoons + two kebab shops) sits a charming rendering of the Pizza Express motif, populated not by chain pizza but by genuine, delightful and frankly utterly surprising Italian food.
Yes, the lighting and tall black chairs – and even the clientele – suggest Pizza Express by any other name, but the menu contains thrills to die for, such as a mouthwatering concoction of beef and brandy cream sauce, served with a choice of boiled and/or buttered vegetables, cooked to taste. Consomme was, if plain, a reliable choice for starters, while that Pizza Express favourite of tomato and mozzarella salad was on hand for those who considered ‘adventure’ and ‘Shepherds Bush Road’ to be, in the same sentence at least, mutually incompatible. Such diners may wish to sample La Casa Bianco’s garden, however.
As for drinks, a pleasing selection of wines are available, at slightly higher than expected prices, but for £9.95 a three course meal is on offer in evenings, providing a basic but tasty selection from the far larger main menu. A seemingly ubiquitous dessert trolley offered up all manner of home-made delights, again including old reliables such as creme caramel.
Offering a laid-back atmosphere and unhurried service, La Casa Bianco has something for everyone.
