Don’t be fooled by the Egon Ronay and Good Curry Guide Certificates in the reception area of The Eastern Balti House. These certificates were awarded to the much lamented Eastern Tandoori restaurant which closed its doors at these premises almost two years ago.
Our lunch at The Eastern Balti House was a sad affair. Nervous staff, slow service and indifferent food were the order of the day. Chicken Shaslik Kebab lacked the barbequed flavour I associate with this dish. The vegetables were overcooked and tasteless. My partner’s Chicken Pakora was pleasant enough even though it was not what she ordered. My Chicken Jalfrezi (hot according to the menu) lacked sufficent spices to tingle my palate and turned out to be extremely mild. The meat in my companion’s Lamb Korma was tender but the dish was spoilt by an unpleasant sweet sauce.
Main courses were accompanied by spiced mixed vegetables. We passed on desserts and coffee and left feeling disappointed. Perhaps this restaurant just had an off day but it will need to improve greatly if it is to survive in an area of Dublin where there are plenty of good Indian restaurants.
