Cuisine Type: Vegetarian

Eat And Two Veg is located just north of Paddington Street, at the North end of Marylebone High Street. This well-known vegetarian restaurant is popular with both meat-eaters and veggies, and although it does get busy there are plenty of tables and they can usually accommodate you easily enough. We visited one Sunday lunch-time and had no problems getting a table.

Although completely vegetarian, many of the dishes have a 'meaty' feel to them. Nuts or olives are available to share at £1.95, while the starters range from spring rolls or hummous and pitta for £3.95 to Thai soya skewers at £5.75. There are also some larger sharing options such as Crispy Aromatic Luck (sic) for £6.50 (vegetable protein served with pancakes, plus sauce, hoi sin and garnish). In their mains section, they offer several vegeburgers (from £9.75) plus salads, bangers and mash or an all day breakfast for £9.95. The most expensive main courses come in at £11.50 and include their spinach and herb nut roast (only available Sundays) or a Marylebone Hotpot (soya lamb with beans and vegetables in a red wine sauce). Desserts range from hazelnut ice cream sundae to sticky toffee pudding (£4.50 to £4.95).

We went straight for the main course and chose an 'EatV burger' served with chips and salad for £9.75 plus Thai green curry for £11.50. We also ordered roasted sweet potato wedges for £3.50 and a portion of fries from the sides menu. The generous portion of chips already provided with the burger turned out to be more than enough, but the wedges were tasty and full of flavour. The curry was medium hot and largely based around tofu chunks and broccoli, and came served with stir-fried brown jasmine rice. We finished off with a vanilla ice-cream presented with a single raspberry for £4.50.

Wines come from all over the world and start at £4.50 per glass for a French Sauvignon or Syrah, whilst the most expensive at £29 per bottle for a white Chateau de Jacques or £30 for an Australian Shiraz. Organic wines are available at £5.25 per glass or £20 per bottle, one rosé option and champagnes priced up to £38 per bottle. Beers, soft drinks, cocktails and hot beverages are also available.

The total bill came in at £54 for two main courses, two side orders, one dessert, two bottles of water, two glasses of perfectly drinkable house white wine and a glass of diet coke. Service was friendly and fast, and we did not have to wait around for the bill.

Perhaps one of the reasons Eat And Two Veg is popular with both meat-eaters and veggies is because of the fact many dishes do have this meaty feel. There are a lot of protein-based meat substitutes such as the tofu and soya chunks, but this does make it a good place for veggies to take their non-vegetarian friends who might otherwise be concerned at having to order without a meat or fish option. The restaurant also caters for vegans, and many of the ordinarily non-vegan options can be re-made to suit a vegan diet. The majority of their produce is organic where possible, everything is guaranteed GM-free and the menu is very clearly labelled in case of any doubt about ingredients.

Overall a good dining experience, even though some of the dishes on offer may at first glance appear simply to be a meat-substitute version of traditional restaurant or pub staples.
